Inner South Residence: Restoring Flow and Light

Oak Street Project: Lounge Room Open to Light and Landscape

Oak Street Project — Music Lounge with Indoor-Outdoor Flow

From Fragmented to Flowing

The Oak Street Project demonstrates our approach to maximising the potential of existing spaces. The homeowners loved their home’s character but felt the layout restricted connection, light, and the way they wanted to live. By working within the existing footprint, we created a home that feels connected, functional, and effortlessly livable, celebrating both interior and outdoor living.

The Challenge

Before the redesign, the home’s single-level layout had several common issues:

  • The kitchen and dining zones were segmented, limiting family interaction.

  • Indoor spaces didn’t connect seamlessly to outdoor areas, despite the home’s strong potential for entertaining.

  • Storage was underused, and there was little opportunity for functional or flexible solutions within the existing structure.

The clients didn’t need more space—they needed spaces that worked better.

The Design Solution

Through our Concept Package process, we focused on improving flow, functionality, and experience, enhancing the home’s lifestyle potential.

  1. Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Flow

    • The kitchen now opens to the side deck and outdoor BBQ, while the lounge connects to the rear deck and backyard, creating spaces that flow effortlessly for family living and entertaining.

  2. Dual-Purpose and Thoughtful Storage

    • An appliances cupboard in the kitchen was designed to double as a bookcase facing the dining area, maximising functionality while keeping sightlines clean.

    • Storage was considered throughout, balancing practicality with visual calm.

  3. Curated Material Palette

    • The kitchen features muted eucalyptus-green cabinetry paired with warm earthy timber finishes, creating a calm, inviting space that isn’t plain or predictable.

    • Materials were selected for durability, warmth, and texture, giving the home character while remaining timeless.

  4. Builder-Ready Documentation

    • The clients received detailed floorplans, elevations, and material schedules, ensuring clarity for builders and a smooth construction process aligned with the design intent.

The Result

Before: A segmented, disconnected home with missed opportunities for connection and flow.
After: A space that feels effortless, welcoming, and fully integrated with family life.

The redesign improved circulation, indoor-outdoor connection, and material harmony, showing that considered design — rather than extra square footage — can transform how a home is experienced every day.

What the Homeowners Say

Virginia did an amazing job for our renovation—we couldn’t have done it without her! She was instrumental in everything from our floor plan to kitchen, laundry and bathroom designs. The end result is perfect and we get so many compliments on our place now!
